Defensive fears

Millwall manager Kenny Jackett admits that his ongoing defensive woes are becoming 'a joke' - though fans are struggling to see the funny side just a week before the start of the league campaign without a recognised central defender.

Left backs Tony Craig and Andy Frampton - who have regularly covered the specialist role - are the latest entries to the treatment room and are set to miss the last pre-season friendly with Middlesbrough this Saturday.

Stand-in skipper Craig took a knock during training on Monday afternoon, while last season's player of the year Frampton rolled his ankle during the warm-up before Tuesday night's 4-1 victory at Dartford.
A frustrated Jackett told the 'News': "Frampton did his ankle in the warm-up today [Tuesday] and Tony Craig was injured in training on Monday.

"It's only knocks and small things here and there, but it's funny how it's all bits and pieces in that same position and nowhere else in the squad, where we have lots of players and cover."

The pair join skipper Paul Robinson - who has had a second operation on his broken toe - transfer-listed Zak Whitbread - who is suffering from an ongoing groin strain - and young Pat O'Connor, who has severe ligament damage.

A 'substantial bid' for Leyton Orient's Tamika Mkandawire was rejected by the east Londoners last week, as the Den boss keeps his other options close to his chest.

Jackett has used trialist Jack Smith across the back four throughout pre-season, but admits the former Swindon defender may not be the answer.

He said: "If we can get one or two bodies in that area on loan then we will. The pursuit has increased over the last week and we continue to look hard.

"Jack is an experienced player at our level and he has done well with us. He has played all across our back four in recent games and has shown some versatility.

"He is a full back. He is not a definite centre half, though he has played there for Swindon. I will wait and see on him, though we are still looking."

Robbo will definitely miss Richard Sadlier's benefit game and the last friendly before the campaign kicks off against Southampton in nine days. Want-away Whitbread is a major doubt for the trip to St Mary's, as he is yet to train with the first team squad, while Frampton and Craig could return in time.

Elsewhere, Jackett believes he is close to knowing his strongest side, as preparations for the assault on League One intensifies. "We are pretty close," he said. "It's the back four situation that worries me more than anything. If you put those four players back into the group we have, I think we will be in business.

"I know what I'm doing with regard to Southampton, but over the course of the season we will need the fresh legs that a good squad will bring and the players will need to be pushing for places.
"I expect Tony Craig and Frampton to overcome their knocks. Maybe not for Saturday, but certainly for the start of the season the following week."

Dartford-MILLWALL F.C. 1 - 4

Price marked his first pre-season start with two goals as Millwall swept aside Dartford with a four-goal show at a sell-out Princes Park on Tuesday night.
Striker Price, who was a frustrated spectator during The Lions pre-season tour of Ireland last week, hit goals on 34 and 50 minutes, whilst Neill Harris (9mins) and Danny Senda (35mins) completed the scoring for a comfortable victory.
As expected, manager Kenny Jackett made wholesale changes to the side that started at Stevenage Borough on Saturday, handing a debut to 16-year-old centre half Chris Hegarty and including Birmingham City teenage trialist Jordan Anderson on the bench.
It proved to be another solid work-out for Jackett's side, who effectively put the result beyond doubt with three goals in the opening half.
Millwall took the lead after nine minutes with a well-worked goal. Price and Lewis Grabban combined to provide an opening for Harris, and his crisp angled finish gave keeper Andrew Young no chance.
The Lions were looking comfortable in possession, and Jackett's men produced a great move out of defence two minutes later, before Jack Smith's superb forward pass to Grabban saw a linesman raise his flag for a dubious off-side.
At times some of the neat interplay created by Millwall caused all sorts of problems to the Darts defence.
On 16 minutes Scott Barron picked out Marc Laird on the edge of the area, and the latter's deft touch found Ashley Grimes, whose low curling shot through a packed penalty area nearly squeezed in at the far post.
A fine threaded forward pass by Grimes looked to have put Harris clean through for a possible second goal 60 seconds later, but keeper Young was quick off his line to thwart the danger.
Barron sent a left-foot effort narrowly wide and debutant Hegarty had a 22nd-minute header held on the line as Millwall continued to create scoring oppportunities.
A second goal always looked likely, and it duly arrived 11 minutes before the break. Barron and Grabban combined well on the left flank before Grabban's deep cross was picked up by Grimes on the right, who in turn played the ball straight back in to Harris. Although the striker's initial shot was blocked by Young's legs, Price was on hand to smash home from close-range to make it 2-0.
But the biggest cheer of the half came seconds after the game had restarted. Laird spread the ball wide to Grimes on the right, his flick picked out rampaging right-back Senda, who hit an unstoppable rocket shot into the roof of the net.
Millwall could have added a fourth on 38 minutes when Hegarty's sublime delivery found Price. The frontman controlled the ball and tried to place his effort past the keeper, who blocked. Price picked up the loose ball and produced an inviting delivery across the face of goal, inches away from the right boot of the unmarked Grimes five yards out.
At the other end a spectacular half-volley from James White (29mins) and Lee Burns glancing header (44mins) that flashed wide of the mark were the Darts best efforts on goal.
It took The Lions just five second-half minutes to increase their lead to 4-0 when Grimes' low shot was parried by Young, and Price was perfectly placed to fire home the rebound from three yards.
Former Dartford favourite Dave Martin entered the fray after 53 minutes to warm applause from the Princes Park crowd in a move that saw Millwall effectively switch to three at the back with Martin given a free role on the left flank.
The chances continued to stack up for Millwall as Harris headed wide (60mins) before Grabban then sent a low drive narrowly off-target following great work by the tireless Ali Fuseini (61mins).
Dartford reduced the arrears 17 minutes from time with a somewhat fortuitous spot-kick awarded against Hegarty, who clearly got a piece of the ball instead of the man.Unfortunately referee Ian Cooper that different and pointed to the spot. Ryan Hayes did the rest with a low finish that sent John Sullivan the wrong way in the visiting goal.
Price nearly restored Millwall's four-goal cushion on 74 minutes with a curler that was comfortably held by sub keeper Deren Ibrahim, whilst Grabban again went close as The Lions turned the screw.
The Darts PA announcer got a slice of the action too on 81 minutes when he stated: "And Millwall are making some substitutions - lots of them!" as the visitors brought on five subs for Laird, Harris, Price, Fuseini and Grabban.
Chris Hackett was denied a goal on 90 minutes with a fierce drive well held by the keeper before providing an injury-time delivery that fellow sub Gary Alexander headed on to Steve Morison, but his header flashed over with the last chance of the game

Stevenage Borough-Millwall 1 - 2

Steve Morison made it a happy return to former club Stevenage Borough as he bagged a brace to maintain Millwall's 100 per cent winning pre-season record with a hard-fought win.
Striker Morison, who joined The Lions at the end of May, took just 62 seconds to score his first goal in a Lions shirt, thumping home a crisp right-foot shot from 12 yards after picking up Gary Alexander's deft flick-on.
Millwall enjoyed a mini period of sustained pressure around the 10-minute mark when Chris Hackkett delivered three corners in succession.
At the other end, the roles were reversed nine minutes later when the home side forced a trio of corners of their own to test Millwall, but both were dealt with comfortably by the visiting defence.
Morsion glanced a header wide from Dave Martin's left wing cross on 21 minutes but within seconds Boro were handed a golden opportunity to level when Lawrie Wilson was caught by Scott Barron just inside the area.
Mitchell Cole stepped up and sent keeper David Forde the wrong with the resulting penalty, firing low into the bottom left-hand corner for the equaliser.
The Lions were denied a second goal 14 minutes before the break with the best move of the half; Scott Barron slipped the ball down the line to Martin, he in turn provided an inviting cross that Morison met at the far post, only for keeper Chris Day to smother his header on the line.
Stevenage went close too on 38 minutes, but former Lion Michael Bostwick's diving header flew a foot over the bar from Boro's fifth corner of the half.
Martin saw his rasping left-footer swerve narrowly off target from 20-yards with the last chance of the opening 45 minutes as the teams went in level at the break.
Kenny Jackett's side created a decent opening eight minutes after the restart, only for Jimmy Abdou to drag his effort wide of the target having been put through by Hackett.
Morison then sliced the home defence open with an intelligent 60th-minute pass that found Martin in space on the left. The winger cut into the danger zone, was put under pressure and chipped narrowly over the bar.
But it didn't take Millwall to add a second goal on 63 minutes, courtesy of Morison's perfectly-weighted chip following good approach play by Abdou and Adam Bolder.
Morison showed some nice touches throughout, and nearly produced a third goal for sub Neil Harris when he picked out Chopper at the far post, only for Chopper to to thwarted by keeper Chris Day in the home goal.
The Lions continued to press in search of a third goal with Chopper glancing over from a Hackett delivery on the right .
Boro responded with their best spell of attacking play in the final quarter of an hour. Charlie Griffin's snap shot was smartly held by Forde before The Lions keeper was called into action again nine minutes from time.
On this occasion he produced a flying save to deny sub David Bridges after Lawrie Wilson's initial free-kick from a central position had been blocked by the wall with what proved to be the final noteworthy goalmouth action of a another good work-out for Jackett's side.

Wall ends Ireland tour with victory

Millwall completed their short tour of Ireland yesterday with victory over Eircom League First Division side Shelbourne but their hosts made them work hard for their win.

Having thrashed Galway United at the weekend, the travelling Lions fans could have been forgiven for thinking another easy victory was on the cards but despite dominating for most of the game they had Shelbourne's Damien Brennan to thank for their winner shortly before half-time when the hapless defender managed to head past his own keeper from around 18-yards.

Manager Kenny Jackett once again used the game as an opportunity to give his players a run out, with Danny Senda completing forty-five minutes of competitive action.

Millwall: Forde (Sullivan, 73mins), Senda (Barron, 46mins), Craig (Beckles, 73mins), Frampton (Dunne, 62mins), Smith, Hackett, Fuseini (Bolder, 46mins), Abdou (Laird, 46mins), Grabban (Grimes, 60mins), Alexander (Morison, 46mins), Harris (Hughes-Mason, 75mins).

A good start

Millwall kicked off their pre-season tour of Ireland with a comfortable 4-0 victory at Galway United on Sunday night.
Lions boss Kenny Jackett used the game as an opportunity to field virtually two different teams in either half of what proved to be a one-sided encounter.
The 100-strong band of Lions fans that made the trio over to the west coast had an opportunity to get a first glimpse of new signings Steve Morison and John Sullivan, along with youngsters Omar Beckles and Kiernan Hughes-Mason, plus trialist Jack Smith.
It proved to be a good work-out for Jackett's squad, with Gary Alexander, Chris Hackett, Neil Harris and Ashley Grimes all hitting the back of the net.
Millwall dominated long spells of the game and created their first opportunity after just three minutes when Lewis Grabban's firm header from a Scott Barron cross was parried at full stretch by home keeper Ger Hanley.
The Lions early pressure paid off after 11 minutes. Morison's inviting ball from the left was flicked onto the bar by the lively Grabban. Fortunately the ball fell invitingly for Alexander who thumped home.
Morison and Alexander both had efforts blocked in quick succession before Grabban drilled wide from 10 yards as The Lions continued to pose a threat going forward.
Some nice interplay between Dave Martin and Scott Barron on the left flank saw the ball find its way to Alexander via a deft Ali Fuseini lay-off, but the frontman's low shot was held at the near post by Hanley.
The keeper was called into action again on the half-hour mark, saving smartly to hold Grabban's blistering shot at the second attempt.
Morison sent a left-foot effort wide of the mark a couple of minutes before the break as Millwall finished the opening half as positively as they had started.
Boss Jackett made seven changes at the break, with Alan Dunne partnering Tony Craig in the centre of defence and Neil Harris spearheading the attack with Morison at the other.
Galway had a couple of half-chances early on as Sean Kelly twice tried his luck from distance. His first effort was deflected for a corner and the second comfortably dealt with by Sullivan in the visiting goal.
Millwall took a firm grip on proceedings with two well-worked goals in the space of 90 seconds around the 70-minute mark.
Morison's last contribution before being replaced by Hughes-Mason was to set up Hackett, whose accurate angled finish made it 2-0.
Just 90 seconds later Hackett turned provider with a pin point centre that saw Harris' diving header power into the top right corner.
The Lions, who were denied a penalty early in the second half when Barron was sent sprawling, had a second appeal waved away by the official when Harris was up-ended by Hanley, earning the striker an unfortunate booking.
But Chopper was all smiles again just two minutes later, picking up a neat return pass from Hughes-Mason and crossing for Grimes, who swept home the fourth goal with aplomb.
Hughes-Mason was unlucky not to mark his debut with a goal, but was twice thwarted by Hanley in the dying minutes of a convincing Millwall win.

"On October 24th a charity do was held in The Blue Anchor in Bermondsey for the Royal Marsden Hospital. Over 2K was raised. This money has still not been passed on to the hospital despite many requests to the land lady Trish. Many people gave there money in good faith yet some nine months down the line the hospital has still not received anything. The land lady managed to get married a couple of weeks after."
This is thiefing of the lowest order.

BOYCOTT THE BLUE ANCHOR BAR AND PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO ALL THE BERMONDSEY WANKERS WHO DRINK IN THERE!!!

10 days!!

10 days, only 10 days than that long summer period without football is over.
Millwall kicks off in Ireland with a pre season friendly vs Galway.
our first trip will be when Middlesborough travels to The Den for the Richard Sadlier testomonial.

No Millwall deal for Danny Spiller

MIDFIELDER Danny Spiller is likely to line up against Millwall next season rather than in a Lions shirt.

The 27-year-old has suffered an 18-month injury nightmare but he will now seek pastures new after being told his two year stint at The Den will not be extended into next season

Thursday, July 2

waiting on Whitbread

Millwall chairman John Berylson has told centre-back Zak Whitbread that he has until the end of July to agree a new contract at The Den.

The 25-year-old has just entered the final 12 months of his current deal with the Lions.

Berylson told the Southwark News: "We are waiting over Zak. July is our deadline on that.

"We have tried to come up with a contract that would allow Zak to leave if we failed to win promotion.

"I don't want to clip his wings, but he is an important asset to us. We won't give him away, but we would agree that he could move on to further his career.

"It is very early days yet, but there have not been the calls I thought there might be."

Sadlier benefit

Ex-Republic of Ireland international Sadlier was forced to retire through injury aged just 24, but will return to The Den for the game against Boro on Saturday August 1.

"It's been almost six years now since I retired so I'm delighted we have finally made this happen," said Sadlier.

"I can't wait for the chance to play once again at The Den and have the opportunity to finally show my appreciation to everyone connected with Millwall and say a final farewell."

Start of the season

Well, there,s still no League football,it takes 1 month before we start again. But plans have to be made to take days-off from work and all sort of things.
Our first trip as it seems now, will be Southend away,we were looking forward to a nice Saturday afternoon at the beach but ob had to spoil things, cause they can,t handle it. So they moved the game to a Fridaynight?!!! Well that is maybe even better,Southend nightlife should be fun too and the whole afternoon drinking on the boulevard of Brighton, sounds fun too!!
....If we visit the Lions earlier is not sure, sure is that we will be at Southend.
